Covering the bad to illuminate the good

Diaryring of the Day:
Now Playing: Godsmack

Why are we so obsessed with th elives of others?

I mean, take a look at what we want to know about 'celebrities'. We yearn to know if they're married, what their sexual preference is, what happens to them on a daily basis, etc. What are we looking for? Are we hoping that by submerging ourselves with the lives of others we'll find someone who is worse off than we are? If it's someone you know, are you just waiting for them to screw up so that you can throw it in their face?

It makes us feel better to see others in pain, doesn't it? It gives us a false sense of superiority. Those things always happens to someone else, right? We are quick to point out why that happened to them, with their faults and decisions. Only they had a hand in it, no one else. No one else's faults could have affected that person in some way. This couldn't be because we don't have any faults right?!? Everything about us is perfect, there's nothing wrong with us, it's everyone else who is imperfect. This is why it is so difficult for us to see our own faults. But why not be able to recognize your own faults. By knowing them you can build and learn and grow. Change, for the good or bad, only happens when we can see the problems. Now this is easy on a societal level seeing as how often everyone is quick to point out the problems with the War on Iraq or the problems with organized religion. But how often do people talk about their faults? Odds are never, unless there are some major issues in which often enough causes the courts to get involved. I have never heard anyone introduce themselves as manipulative or submissive or messy, rather we introduce ourselves by what is good about ourselves, our achievements, goals, etc.

Now, I think now is the perfect time for all of us to sit down and think about our faults. What are they? Why are they? What makes them faults? Are they something that hinders us for obtaining our life goals? Can we change them for the good?

But I'm asking too much of people in this. Why should we acknowledge that anything is wrong with us? It would only help us to think about the future and to push for the peace that people so vocally call for and yet we cannot achieve.
