Control, it's the new black.

Diaryring of the Day:
Now Playing: Foo Fighters (the New Cd)

Control - 1. to exercise restraint or direction over; dominate; 2. to hold in check; curb; ... 6. the act or power of controlling; regulation; domination or command; 7. the situation of being under the regulation, domination, or command of another.....

I think I have finally figured out what drives the human race. Control. Control of the environment. Control of others. Control of oneself.

Control makes us feel powerful, doesn't it?

Those with eating disorders feel all powerful because they can restrain themselves from appetite or they can control what the food does to their bodies. Losing weight, another form of self-control. It's all the rage, isn't it? It's the new black.

This whole War on Iraq is all about control. So many options out there, but why take them when we can oust the one in power and put someone in that we can control? War doesn't boost the economy like it used to, so there goes that argument. If the inspectors say that progress is being made, why can't we believe them? As much as I love my country, I am finding it more and more difficult to believe in the actions of the president.

Control is the center of the motivation of many crimes as well as abusive relationships. Why beat someone and then make promises to never do so again? Control. If you're convincing enough, you'll be able to force that person to believe that you love them, even though you're willing to break their arm if they don't toast the bread properly. It feels great to be in control, doesn't it? To be you're own person, not answering to anyone, not even the law.

Has there ever been a true anarchy? I don't recall their being any because humans naturally form rules. Rules, the ultimate form of control. They exist everywhere. Spoken, unspoken. Oral, written. You can't get away from them. They are everywhere, controlling you. Making decisions for you.

Control doesn't just drive human nature, it drives nature as a whole, doesn't it? Humans and many other living creatures stop intake of oxygen and death is imminent. Volcanoes. Earthquakes. The Weather.

We are constantly fighting it and at the same time falling under it. The constant, bitter fight. It sometimes seems pointless to fight it, hence the idea of fate. And then sometimes there's the need to fight it whole heartedly, the idea of free will. It's a vicious cycle. But it's those cycles that drive us, I think.
